01 Nov Hibiscus Hot Toddy
A fellow chef that I used to work with, laughed every time I mentioned Hot Toddies. Until he got sick one day and I offered him a cup. He probably only then realised there’s whiskey in it.
And that despite the name it is a badass drink indeed. I hope he is well wherever he is now. And I hope that he thinks of me every time he has a Hot Toddy.
There’s no scientific evidence that hot toddies are therapeutic, at least no more than an ordinary cup of tea or soup. But they are good for the soul, I can tell you that.
I infused mine with hibiscus, which is packed with antioxidants and above all it makes the drink pink.
Who’s laughing now?
Yields: 2 drinks Preparation Time:10 minutes
11/2 cup water
1 tablespoon Hibiscus tea leaves
1/3 cup whiskey
4 teaspoons honey
5 teaspoons lemon juice
1 lemon round
1 cinnamon stick (optional, to garnish)
In a teapot or saucepan, bring the water to a simmer. Add the tea and let it steep for 3-5 minutes. Strain the tea into a teapot.
Add the whiskey, honey and lemon juice. Stir until the honey has dissolved. Taste, and adjust the honey and lemon juice to your taste.
Garnish with a lemon round and cinnamon stick and serve hot on a cold day.
