31 Aug Fitness / The Importance of a Good Sports Bra
Whether your workout involves running, walking, pilates, sports or gym equipment, a decent sports bra is a must .
Let’s talk Human anatomy:
Breasts are mostly composed of fatty tissue and are supported mainly by skin and fragile ligaments called Coopers’ ligaments. Because these are not elastic, during repetitive or high impact sports the breasts bounce and pull on the ligaments, forcing them to stretch. Once these ligaments have stretched they will unfortnately never return to their former state. The damage is irreversible.
Let’s talk numbers:
Running without any bra at all causes the average woman’s breasts to move up and down by 8.5cm. Wearing an ordinary bra reduces this by 32% . A sports bra reduces this by at least another 20% .
So,if there is one thing that you should splurge on, that it is definitely a sports bra.Given the current boom in athleisure and sportsluxe industry you will easily find the perfect bra for you without having to compromise on style, support or comfort .
Choose your bra wisely, take good care of it,make sure you read and save the care tags (in most cases you are adviced not to use fabric softener for example, and most people are not aware of that) Invest in a good sports bra that will last a long time and prevent irreversible damage by keeping you comfy and secure. Try as many as possible on.
Make sure you have the right size: raise your hands over your head. If the elastic band moves up your rib cage, you need a smaller band or the straps may need to be adjusted.
On a new sports bra, the band should fit snugly on the first hook so it can be tightened to the second or third hook as the bra stretches out.
Your sports bra should fit slightly tighter than a regular bra. The cup fabric should be smooth. If you notice wrinkles on the fabric it’s probably too big for you-try going a size down.
Approach bra fitting like a science. 9.5 million women exercise without wearing a sports bra at all, don’t be one of them.If you can, go for a proper fitting and get help from an expert. If that’s too uncomfortable for you (please reconsider) seek guidance on line.Go to a store and try on a few different sizes-You should be able to get no more than one finger under the band or in the cup.In any case take your sports bra seriously and it will make a world of a difference !
